Three Utility Types Unified in a Single Building — at 1/10th the Cost of Smart Meter Replacement
A building owner automated electricity, gas, and water readings in one platform, eliminating on-site inspections and strengthening the management company relationship.
The Challenge
This owner-operated multi-tenant commercial building in Tokyo had meters scattered across floors — behind locked doors, in unventilated basements next to sewage tanks. Readings required entering tenant spaces during business hours, disrupting meetings and client interactions. All values were recorded by hand, and tenants questioned the credibility of pencil-written records. Smart meters were considered, but would have required three separate platforms at roughly ten times the cost.
The Solution
VeriReader was retrofitted onto existing electricity, gas, and water meters, all managed through one dashboard. Photo-verified readings replaced handwritten records. The deployment qualified for Japan's IT adoption subsidy program.
The Results
- Eliminated all on-site reading, including access to uncomfortable basement locations
- Unified three utility types at roughly one-tenth the cost of smart meter replacements
- Photo-verified data resolved billing disputes; management company freed to focus on leasing and occupancy
For small building owners, VeriReader removes the cost-and-complexity barrier to multi-utility automation — without the infrastructure cost of full smart meter replacement.
